PDF to Markdown

Turn a PDF into clean Markdown with headings, lists and paragraphs — for notes, docs, wikis and AI chats. Runs in your browser.

Processed locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Markdown is the plain-text format behind README files, wikis, note apps like Obsidian and Notion, static websites and AI chat prompts. PDF to Markdown pulls the text out of a PDF and rebuilds its structure — headings from the font sizes, bullet and numbered lists, bold and italic paragraphs — so you get an editable, readable .md file instead of a wall of broken lines.

How to pdf to markdown

  1. 1. Add a PDF that contains real text (not a scan — use OCR PDF first for those).
  2. 2. Optionally mark page breaks with a horizontal rule.
  3. 3. Click PDF to Markdown and download document.md.

When to use PDF to Markdown

Feed a document to an AI assistant

Paste clean Markdown into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini instead of a PDF: headings and lists survive, and it uses fewer tokens than messy extracted text.

Move documentation into a wiki

Turn PDF manuals, policies or meeting notes into Markdown for GitHub, GitLab, Confluence, Notion or Obsidian.

Study notes

Convert lecture handouts into Markdown, then highlight, reorganise and add your own notes in any text editor.

How the structure is recognised

The largest text sizes that are clearly bigger than the body text become headings — up to three levels (#, ##, ###). Paragraphs are rebuilt by joining lines that belong together and re-attaching words hyphenated at the end of a line. Lines that start with a bullet (•, -, *) or a number (1., 2)) become Markdown lists, and paragraphs set entirely in bold or italic keep that emphasis.

What doesn't convert

Tables come out as text, one cell after another, because PDFs don't store tables as tables — rebuild important ones with Markdown table syntax. Images, links and footnote numbering are not included, and multi-column layouts may interleave the columns. For a document you need to keep looking exactly the same, PDF to Word is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Not directly: a scan has no text to extract. Run OCR PDF first, then convert the searchable PDF to Markdown.

Which Markdown flavour is it?

Standard CommonMark — headings, paragraphs, lists, bold and italic — which every Markdown app and GitHub understand.

Are accented characters kept?

Yes. The text is extracted as Unicode, so Romanian, German, French and other accented letters stay as they are.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
