A transparent background means an image has no solid backdrop — the area around the subject is empty, so it blends onto any color or photo you place it on. Only certain formats support transparency, mainly PNG and WebP (JPG does not).

How transparency is stored
Formats supporting transparency add a fourth channel, alpha, alongside red, green and blue. Alpha records how opaque each pixel is, from fully transparent to fully solid. Because it is a range rather than a switch, edges can be partly transparent, which is what lets anti-aliased text and soft shadows sit cleanly on any background instead of showing a jagged fringe.
Which formats support it
PNG and WebP support full alpha transparency. GIF supports only a single fully transparent colour with no partial values, which is why GIF cut-outs have hard, stair-stepped edges. JPG has none at all — converting a transparent image to JPG fills the empty area with a solid colour, usually white, and that fill cannot be undone.
Transparency in PDFs
PDF does support transparency, but a page always has a background, and by default it is white. Placing a transparent PNG into a document therefore usually looks identical to placing an opaque one, because the transparent areas simply show white paper. Where it does matter is overlap: a transparent logo laid over an existing page lets the content beneath show through, which is exactly how watermarks and stamps work.
The checkerboard is not part of your image
Editors draw a grey and white checkerboard to indicate transparent areas, because there is no other way to show "nothing" on screen. It is never saved into the file. If a checkerboard appears in an exported image or a PDF you built, the image was flattened onto that pattern at some point — usually captured by a screenshot rather than exported.
